The product of a 1920s merger, Japanese-based auto manufacturer Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. has enjoyed tremendous success over the years, much of which can be credited to the brand’s unwavering commitment to innovation. Originally founded as Kaishinskha Motor Car Works by Masujiro Hashimoto in 1911, the company produced its first vehicle in 1914. They dubbed it the DAT, which was an acronym of the investors’ surnames: Den, Aoyama, and Takeuchi.
During the oil crisis of 1973, consumers began demanding vehicles that offered better fuel mileage. To accommodate, Nissan established a factory in Mexico for the production of the Nissan Sunny. This was the first official assembly plant in North America.
Today, the global vehicle manufacturer produces more than 60 models under the Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun brands. The Nissan marque alone can be found in over 191 countries – a true testament to the beloved brand’s impressive longevity.
In 2013, Nissan became the sixth largest automaker in the entire world, followed in 2016 by its distinction as the largest electric vehicle (EV) automaker in the world. The company plans to extend its role as a pioneer in electric vehicles, symbolized by the world’s best-selling all-electric vehicle in history, the Nissan LEAF, which sold more than 300,000 vehicles in 2018 alone.
